CA104 Aluminium Bronze
CA104 Aluminium Bronze is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant copper-based alloy primarily composed of copper (Cu), aluminium (Al), and small amounts of iron (Fe) and nickel (Ni). It is known for its excellent mechanical properties, wear resistance, and ability to withstand harsh environments, making it suitable for demanding applications in marine, aerospace, and industrial sectors.
Description
Product Description
CA104 is an aluminum bronze alloy that incorporates iron, manganese, and nickel. It is recognized as a high-strength, heat-resistant bronze, capable of maintaining stable mechanical properties even at elevated temperatures up to 400°C. Additionally, it exhibits excellent anti-friction characteristics. The alloy demonstrates strong corrosion resistance in various environments, including atmospheric conditions, fresh water, and seawater. Due to its exceptional properties, CA104 is widely used in the production of high-strength, wear-resistant components and parts designed to operate under high-temperature conditions. Common applications include bushings, bearings, flanges, gears, and other critical parts that require both corrosion resistance and durability under demanding wear conditions.
Composition of CA104 Aluminium Bronze
The typical chemical composition of CA104 Aluminium Bronze is as follows:
Copper (Cu): 85–89%
Aluminium (Al): 9–11%
Iron (Fe): 2–4%
Nickel (Ni): 1–2%
Other Elements: Trace amounts of manganese (Mn), silicon (Si), and zinc (Zn).
Properties of CA104 Aluminium Bronze
- High Strength: Offers excellent tensile and yield strength, even at elevated temperatures.
- Corrosion Resistance: Highly resistant to corrosion in seawater, acidic, and alkaline environments.
- Wear Resistance: Exceptional resistance to wear, galling, and erosion, making it ideal for sliding and bearing applications.
- Machinability: Can be machined with standard tools, though it requires sharp cutting edges and proper lubrication.
Thermal Conductivity: Good thermal conductivity, making it suitable for heat exchangers and other thermal applications.
- Non-Sparking: Non-sparking properties make it safe for use in explosive or flammable environments.

Heat Treatment of CA104 Aluminium Bronze
Heat treatment can enhance the mechanical properties of CA104 Aluminium Bronze. Common heat treatment processes include:
- Solution Annealing
Heat to 850–950°C, hold for 1–2 hours, and then rapidly cool (quench) in water.
Purpose: To dissolve alloying elements and achieve a uniform microstructure.
- Aging (Precipitation Hardening)
Heat to 450–550°C, hold for 2–4 hours, and then air cool.
Purpose: To precipitate fine particles and increase strength and hardness.
Machining and Fabrication
- Machining: Use sharp tools and adequate lubrication to avoid work hardening.
- Welding: Can be welded using gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) or gas metal arc welding (GMAW) with matching filler rods.
- Forming: Suitable for hot and cold working processes.
Advantages of CA104 Aluminium Bronze
- Superior strength and toughness.
- Excellent resistance to corrosion and wear.
- Non-sparking and non-magnetic properties.
- Good thermal and electrical conductivity.
Applications of CA104 Aluminium Bronze
Due to its unique combination of properties, CA104 Aluminium Bronze is widely used in the following applications:
- Marine Engineering
Propeller shafts, pump components, and seawater valves.
Marine hardware exposed to seawater and corrosive environments.
