Copper iron alloy is a copper based alloy system with iron (Fe) as the main alloying element, including subclasses such as copper iron, copper iron silver, copper iron phosphorus, etc. When the iron mass fraction exceeds 5%, special metallurgical processes such as vacuum consumable melting should be used to control the uniformity of the microstructure. The alloy has a tensile strength of up to 600MPa and a conductivity of 240% IACS in the hard state, and its comprehensive performance is superior to traditional tin phosphorus bronze. It combines the high conductivity of copper with the damage resistance of iron, and is widely used in 5G communication, new energy vehicles, and national defense fields

 

Classification of Copper Iron Alloys

 

Copper iron alloy is an alloy material composed of copper and iron elements. Its chemical composition can be classified into different types based on the content of copper and iron. Common copper iron alloys include the following:

  • Pure copper alloy: copper content above 99%, iron content below 1%.
  • Copper iron alloy: Copper content ranges from 70% to 95%, and iron content ranges from 5% to 30%.
  • Low iron copper alloy: Copper content is between 90% and 95%, and iron content is between 5% and 10%.
  • High speed railway copper alloy: The copper content is between 70% and 90%, and the iron content is between 10% and 30%.

The chemical composition of copper iron alloys can be adjusted and controlled according to different contents to adapt to applications and needs in different fields.

 

Analysis of Chemical Composition 

 

  • Copper (Cu, balance)

Copper, as an alloy matrix, provides excellent electrical and thermal conductivity while ensuring good processability.
Endow the composition with basic metal ductility to meet various forming process requirements.

  • Iron (Fe, 2.1%~2.6%)

The addition of iron significantly improves the strength and hardness of CuFe2P, enhances the wear resistance of the alloy, and makes it suitable for the manufacturing of high-strength components.
The iron content is strictly controlled between 2.1% and 2.6%, which can strengthen the alloy without affecting the stability of its conductivity.

  • Phosphorus (P, 0.015%~0.15%)

Phosphorus element improves the corrosion resistance of CuFe2P, especially significantly enhancing its antioxidant capacity in humid environments.
Phosphorus also promotes grain refinement, improving the uniformity and fatigue resistance of the alloy.

  • Lead (Pb, ≤ 0.03%)

The control of trace lead helps to improve the machinability, making it easy for precision machining and widely used in connectors and small parts.

  • Zinc (Zn, 0.05%~0.20%)

The introduction of zinc provides a slight corrosion resistance enhancement effect, while improving the uniformity of surface treatment and the alloy's oxidation resistance.

  • Total impurities (≤ 0.5%)

Strictly control the impurity content to ensure that there is no accumulation of harmful elements inside the alloy, further improving electrical performance and mechanical stability.

The production of copper iron alloy CuFe5 first involves smelting, using high-purity electrolytic copper as the main raw material, and adding an appropriate amount of iron (usually in the form of pure iron or iron alloy) according to chemical composition requirements. The fusion of copper and iron is relatively easy, but the melting temperature and purity of the melt need to be controlled. The smelting process is usually carried out under a protective atmosphere to prevent copper oxidation. The melted alloy liquid is refined to remove impurities and then cast, usually using continuous casting or semi continuous casting to form ingots. The ingot undergoes homogenization annealing treatment to eliminate internal stress and improve tissue uniformity. Subsequently, the ingot is opened by hot rolling (or hot extrusion) and processed into a suitable billet for cold processing. The main processing methods are cold rolling or cold drawing, which produces work hardening through cold working, significantly improving strength and hardness. According to the requirements of the final product, annealing treatment can be carried out during or after the cold working process

  • Heat treatment optimization

The annealing temperature is controlled between 450 ℃ and 600 ℃ to eliminate processing stress, improve alloy ductility and fatigue resistance.
Proper recrystallization treatment after cold processing can refine the grain size and further improve the mechanical properties.
