Description
C70310-STOL94 Copper-Nickel-Silicon Alloy is a high-performance material composed primarily of copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and a small amount of silicon (Si), typically ranging between 1-4%. This alloy is renowned for its exceptional toughness, high elastic modulus, and corrosion resistance, making it highly suitable for demanding environments such as high temperatures, high humidity, and seawater exposure.

Processing & Heat Treatment

- Hot Working: Can be hot rolled or forged in the range of 850°C - 950°C.
- Cold Working: After solution treatment, it can be cold rolled, drawn, etc., for some work hardening.
Core Heat Treatment Sequence
- Solution Treatment: Heated to approximately 800°C - 850°C to dissolve alloying elements fully into the copper matrix, followed by rapid quenching (water quench) to obtain a supersaturated solid solution.
- Aging Treatment: Aged at 350°C - 450°C for an extended period (several to over ten hours). During this stage, spinodal decomposition occurs, forming a nanoscale modulated structure of Ni/Sn-rich and lean regions, creating intense coherency strain hardening-the fundamental reason for its ultra-high strength.
- Important Note: Aging temperature and time must be precisely controlled; over-aging leads to property degradation.
Machinability: Machinability is fair in the solution-treated condition but becomes very poor in the peak-aged (high-strength) condition. Carbide tools and low-speed, high-feed rates are required.
Weldability: Weldability is fair. Low heat-input methods like electron beam or laser welding are typically used, followed by re-solution and aging treatments to restore properties.
