ICA Predicts That Copper Demand May Increase To Approximately 41 Million Tons By 2040

Apr 17, 2024

According to the latest research forecast from the International Copper Association (ICA), as the global green energy transition accelerates, the demand for copper as a key raw material will show a significant growth trend. It is expected that global copper demand will increase from 28.3 million tons to approximately 41 million tons from 2020 to 2040, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.85%.

This study specifically points out that regional trends will have a significant impact on the allocation of copper market share. Among them, India and Southeast Asian countries are regarded as the regions with the fastest growth in copper demand. India is expected to achieve a compound annual growth rate of 7%, making it the country with the fastest growth in copper demand; Southeast Asian countries are expected to follow closely with a compound annual growth rate of 6%. This growth trend not only reflects the rapid economic development in these regions, but also highlights the key role of green energy transformation in promoting copper demand growth.

It is worth noting that although China has always held an important position in global copper consumption, its growth rate may gradually slow down in the future. However, China is expected to remain the world's largest user of copper wire, and this position is difficult to shake in the short term.

In addition, the impact of green applications on the demand for copper pipes cannot be ignored. According to ICA's forecast, copper pipes will bring an increase in copper demand of nearly 1.6 million tons from 2020 to 2040. This growth is mainly due to the rapid development of green buildings, energy-saving air conditioning, and heat pumps, which have a huge demand for efficient and environmentally friendly copper pipe materials.

This study by ICA reveals the future development trends and challenges of the copper market for us. With the deepening of the global green energy transformation, the position of copper as a key raw material will become more prominent. Meanwhile, regional trends and green applications will also become important factors affecting copper demand. Faced with this trend, countries and enterprises need to actively adjust their strategies, strengthen technological innovation and industrial upgrading, in order to cope with the changes and challenges in the future copper market.
