Alloy101 Oxygen Free Copper

Oxygen-free copper known as OFC, Cu-OF, Cu-OFE, or oxygen-free high-conductivity copper (OFHC)is produced by melting copper and treating it with carbon and carbonaceous gases. Through an electrolytic refining process, most of the oxygen is removed, resulting in a material composed of 99.95–99.99% copper with oxygen content no higher than 0.0005%. The exceptional purity of oxygen-free copper significantly enhances key properties commonly associated with standard copper, such as thermal and electrical conductivity, ductility, impact strength, and machinability. Owing to these advantageous characteristics, the material is widely utilized across various industrial applications.

Description

Alloy 101, also known as Oxygen-Free High-Conductivity (OFHC) Copper or OFE Copper, is refined in a specialized oxygen-free environment to achieve a purity of 99.99%. This highly purified copper offers exceptional electrical and thermal conductivity, along with a wide range of beneficial properties, including high conductivity, superior thermal performance, non-magnetic characteristics, corrosion resistance, durability, and antimicrobial qualities.

Alloy 101 Oxygen-Free Copper is available in a diverse selection of forms and shapes, including plates, rods, sheets, strips, and tubes.

General Grade and Chemical Composition

Oxygen-free copper materials are classified based on the extent of oxygen removal from the base copper. The two primary grades are:

  • Cu-OF (C10200) grade copper achieves a purity of up to 99.95%. This grade demonstrates exceptional purity. While no copper can be entirely 100% pure, modern refining technology has enabled the reduction of residual oxygen content to a practical range of 0.001–0.003%.
  • Cu-OFE (C10100) grade copper attains a purity of up to 99.99%. It is purer than Cu-OF and exhibits approximately 1% higher electrical conductivity along with superior corrosion resistance. As a result, this grade is often employed in high-quality audio/visual systems.

Both above grades of oxygen-free copper are available in a wide variety of forms and shapes such as :Plate,Rod,Sheet,Strip,Tube.

Comparison with Similar Copper Alloys

Alloy Designation Common Name Typical Purity Key Distinction & Typical Use
C10100 Oxygen-Free Electronic (OFE) 99.99%+ Highest conductivity, guaranteed immunity to hydrogen disease. For the most demanding electronic, high-frequency, and vacuum applications. Highest cost.
C10200 Oxygen-Free (OF) 99.95%+ Slightly higher oxygen than C10100, but still immune to hydrogen disease. Slightly lower conductivity (~100% IACS). A cost-effective choice for many high-end applications.
C11000 Electrolytic Tough Pitch (ETP) 99.90%+ Contains oxygen (~0.04%), susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. Conductivity ~101% IACS, but cannot be heated in reducing atmospheres. Most common and economical; used for general wiring, busbars, etc.

Processing & Handling Notes

  • Annealing: Can be performed in reducing, inert, or vacuum atmospheres to restore ductility.
  • Cleaning: Must be thoroughly cleaned of oils and contaminants before processing, especially for vacuum or plating applications.
  • Storage: Should be stored in a clean, dry environment to prevent surface oxidation or contamination.

Production

Oxygen-free copper (OFC) is produced through an intensive manufacturing and refining process, which involves melting copper and introducing gases into the final composition. To prevent internal deformation and crack formation, manufacturers may incorporate heat treatments into the production process to relieve stress. If the OFC does not soften during heat treatment, the manufacturer must perform additional annealing (tempering) operations on the material to enhance its strength.
