Description
The Bourdon tube is a measuring element form of a pressure gauge, which can be installed on a tee, but there is also a shut-off valve between the impulse pipe and the pressure gauge. The most commonly used bourdon tube is type C, in addition, there are spiral type, type C combination, Fried Dough Twists type and other types. The material of the Boden tube is copper based or iron-based alloy. It has lower sensitivity compared to other pressure-sensitive components and is commonly used to measure larger pressures, often in combination with other elastic components. In 1852, E. Boden obtained the patent for the Boden tube. The Boden tube is still widely used in many instruments, especially for measuring pressure and force.

But some of these basic requirements are common to all instrument users. The steel used for recycling should be produced through a smelting furnace that can strictly control the purity. To prevent surface decarburization, especially for thin-walled pipes, as surface decarburization can reduce fatigue resistance. Recent research has found that using materials melted in vacuum to manufacture Boden tubes improves their fatigue resistance.
Manufacturing and Key Considerations for Phosphor Bronze Bourdon Tubes

- Heat Treatment: The formed tube undergoes a stress-relief anneal to set its elastic shape and remove internal stresses from forming, ensuring stable performance.
- Accuracy Class: Gauges with phosphor bronze tubes are commonly found in Grade B (±1.6%) and Grade A (±1.0%) accuracy classes (per ASME B40.1). Higher grades (0.25% or 0.1%) typically require beryllium copper or special stainless steels.
- Pressure Ranges: Commonly used for low to medium pressure ranges (e.g., vacuum up to 1,000 psi / 70 bar), though specific designs can go higher.
Applications
The Bourdon tube is the core sensing element of mechanical pressure gauges. In a typical structure, a C-shaped bent Bourdon tube with an angle of about 250 degrees is commonly used to measure a pressure of about 60 bar. When higher pressure needs to be detected, a spiral or helical design of the Bourdon tube structure is usually used.
In practical applications, the Boden tube has certain limitations in overpressure protection, so it is often used in conjunction with chemical seals to isolate corrosive or viscous media under complex working conditions. The range coverage of the Bourdon tube pressure gauge is wide, extending from low pressure measurement of 0 to 0.6 bar to high pressure detection of 0 to 4000 bar. Its measurement accuracy varies depending on the level, ranging from 0.1% to 4.0%.
