Inconel Alloy 718 Tube

Inconel Alloy 718 is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant nickel-chromium alloy used in a variety of demanding applications, particularly in aerospace, oil and gas, and chemical processing industries. Inconel 718 tubes are commonly used in environments that require high strength and resistance to extreme temperatures, corrosion, and oxidation.

Description

Product Description

Inconel Alloy 718 (UNS N07718/W.Nr. 2.4668) is a robust nickel-chromium alloy renowned for its exceptional strength and resistance to corrosion, making it suitable for use in extreme temperatures ranging from -423°F to 1300°F. This age-hardenable material is highly versatile and can be easily fabricated into intricate components.

Widely utilized in the aerospace industry, this nickel-chromium-molybdenum superalloy is a key material for manufacturing hot section parts of turbine blades, ducting systems, and engine exhaust systems. Remarkably, nickel-based superalloys like Inconel 718 account for approximately 50% of the materials used in aircraft and rocket engines.

Inconel Alloy 718 tubes are particularly well-suited for applications such as hot extrusion tooling and various high-performance parts, including rings, fasteners, casings, and instrumentation components. They are also commonly used in the production of nuclear fuel element spacers and high-strength bolts, showcasing their adaptability and reliability in demanding environments.

Properties of Inconel 718

  • High Strength: Maintains excellent mechanical properties at both high and low temperatures.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Resists oxidation, corrosion, and pitting in harsh environments.
  • Temperature Resistance: Performs well in temperatures ranging from cryogenic up to 1300°F (704°C).
  • Weldability: Can be welded using common techniques, though post-weld heat treatment is often required.

Manufacturing Standards

  • Inconel 718 tubes are manufactured to meet various industry standards, including:
  • ASTM B161: Standard for nickel seamless pipe and tube.
  • ASTM B516: Standard for welded nickel and nickel-cobalt alloy tubes.
  • AMS 5596: Aerospace Material Specification for seamless tubes.

Common Sizes and Forms

  • Seamless and Welded Tubes: Available in both forms depending on the application.
  • Sizes: Range from small diameters (e.g., 1/8 inch) to larger diameters (e.g., several inches), with varying wall thicknesses.

Heat Treatment

  • Inconel 718 is typically supplied in the annealed condition and can be age-hardened to achieve higher strength. Common heat treatment processes include:
  • Solution Annealing: Heating to 1700-1850°F (927-1010°C) followed by rapid cooling.
  • Aging: Heating to 1325-1350°F (718-732°C) for 8 hours, then furnace cooling to 1150°F (621°C) and holding for a total aging time of 18 hours.

Machining and Fabrication

  • Machining: Requires specialized techniques due to its high strength and work-hardening characteristics.
  • Fabrication: Can be formed, welded, and joined using standard methods, though care must be taken to avoid contamination and ensure proper heat treatment.
